About Us
A Brief History of the Nevada Area Council
The purpose of Scouting America*, incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, is to provide an educational program for youth and young adults to build desirable qualities of character, to train in the responsibilities of participatory citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.
The Nevada Area Council was granted a charter by the National Council, Scouting America in 1924, and charged with the responsibility of organizing and supporting successful Cub Scout Packs, Scouts BSA Troops, Venturing Crews, and Explorer Posts within its 101,355 square mile geographical boundary. Our boundary includes northern Nevada and northeastern California. Serving in these Nevada counties: Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Esmerelda, Eureka, Humboldt, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Pershing, Storey, Washoe and White Pine in Nevada. In California we serve Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas and Sierra counties.
The Nevada Area Council operates a full-service Scout office located in Reno, Nevada. The Scout office offers a full line of uniforms, official camping gear, handicrafts, literature, and Scouting accessories. Under the guidance of the Scout Executive, the Nevada Area Council has a professional staff of 4 and an office staff of 3 who work in cooperation with adult volunteers in delivering the program of Scouting to the youth of our communities. A Scouting professional’s responsibility is to recruit, train, and motivate volunteers and to support successful Scout units.
*The Boy Scouts of America announced in May, 2024 that it will be changing its name to Scouting America. This change reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to welcoming every youth in America to experience the benefits of Scouting. The name change will go into effect on February 8, 2025, the organization’s 115th birthday.
