About Us

What is Scouting in Northern Nevada?

For over 100 years, the Nevada Area Council (NAC) has been the premier provider of youth leadership and outdoor education from the high desert of Elko to the Sierra Nevada trails in Reno and Sparks. We serve families by providing a “third space” outside of school where youth build the resilience, grit, and integrity.

We have a very large 101,355 square mile geographical boundary. Our boundary includes Northern Nevada and Northeastern California. Serving these Nevada counties: Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Esmerelda, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Pershing, Storey, Washoe, and White Pine in Nevada. In California we serve: Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, and Sierra counties.

We are a organization deeply embedded in the Northern Nevada and Northeastern California communities. Our units are active in:

  • Washoe County: Reno (South Reno, Northwest Reno), Sparks, Spanish Springs, and more.
  • Rural Nevada: Elko, Carson City, Douglas County, and beyond.
  • California: Northeastern California regions that border Nevada.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Reno, we prioritize transparency and the safety of every child.

  • We enforce mandatory Two-Deep Leadership and rigorous background checks for all adult mentors through the National Scouting America Youth Protection portal.
  • We also maintain a high percentage of trained leaders to ensure quality program delivery and a high adult-to-youth ratio for better supervision.

The Nevada Area Council operates a full-service Scout office located in Reno, Nevada. The Scout office offers a full line of uniforms, official camping gear, handicrafts, literature, and Scouting accessories. Under the guidance of the Scout Executive, the Nevada Area Council has a professional staff of 4 and an office staff of 3 who work in cooperation with adult volunteers in delivering the program of Scouting to the youth of our communities.

*The Boy Scouts of America announced in May, 2024 that it will be changing its name to Scouting America. This change reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to welcoming every youth in America to experience the benefits of Scouting. The name change will go into effect on February 8, 2025, the organization’s 115th birthday.
