What Makes a Trained Leader?

Every Youth Deserves a Trained Adult Leader

Adult leaders in units are considered trained, and eligible to wear the official “Trained” emblem, once they have completed Safeguard Youth Training and the training courses outlined below, or have completed Safeguarding Youth Training and a previous basic training course when it was current. If you complete training in-person, you may take training in any district or council and send a copy of the completion certificate to training@nevadaareascouting.org receive credit. Safeguarding Youth Training is a joining requirement for all registered adults and must be retaken every two years!

While the courses listed below are the minimum required for Basic Leader Training, Scouting America offers many courses to help leaders provide the very best possible Scouting experience to youth. Go here to view ADULT training material.

Youth Protection Training

  • Safeguarding Youth Training is required for all Scouting America registered volunteers and is a joining requirement.
  • Safeguarding Youth Training must be taken every year. If a volunteer’s Safeguarding Youth Training is not current at the time of annual registration renewal, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
  • If a volunteer’s Safeguarding Youth Training certification lapses at any other time, membership will be suspended. Suspended members are no longer allowed to participate, attend, or represent Scouting programs and activities as a leader and may only attend as a legal guardian for their own youth.
  • Watch the Understanding Youth Protection Video

E-Learning

What is E-Learning?

Many courses are available in the E-Learning section of my.scouting.org. A login is required, but anyone may create a user account and view the courses. Registered members of Scouting America must provide their member numbers (as part of the user profile) to receive credit. These include:

  • Safeguarding Youth Training
  • Position-Specific Training (Including Merit Badge Counselor, Chaplain, & New Member Coordinator)
  • Hazardous Weather Training (Required for Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters)
  • BALOO Prerequisite Training
  • Safe Swim Defense Training
  • Safety Afloat Training
  • Trek Safely Training
  • Climb on Safely Training
  • Drive Safely Training
  • and more…

One of the best parts of E-Learning is that it is tied to your membership account IF your member number is correctly linked. When courses are completed, training records are automatically updated.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have forgotten your Username and/or Password, please select “Forgot Username?” or “Forgot Password.” DO NOT create a duplicate account as this confuses the system.

If you have been registered in another council or need to update your member number, contact us at: 775-787-1111 or info@nevadaareascouting.org
